A Typical Day on Safari
While we tell our guests that there really is no such thing as a “typical” day on safari because each day holds a different adventure, there is a natural rhythm to your daily schedule on safari that is tied to the times of day the animals will be most active: early morning, late afternoon, and evenings.
The schedule that follows is a good guideline, but it may vary slightly due to your safari’s time of year. Additionally, some camps offer a variety of activities as an alternative to game viewing in a vehicle.
6:00 AM: A gentle tap at your door alerts you that a pot of coffee or hot chocolate has been delivered to your tent to help extract you from your comfortable bed.
7:00 AM: Board your safari vehicle, where you may find heavy wool blankets to ward off the early morning chill. As the sun begins to rise, the temperature warms, and you will shed your layers in favor of a cap and sunglasses. Keep your eyes open for the big cats who may be returning from a night of hunting. Mid-morning, pause and enjoy another cup of coffee and a biscuit or two.
11:00 AM: Return to camp where brunch awaits you. With your stomach full head back to your tent or to the pool for a midday siesta, review and edit the morning’s photos, take notes on what you’ve seen, or borrow a book from camp to brush up on your knowledge of African birds and mammals.
3:00 PM: Gather for afternoon tea before boarding your safari vehicle for the afternoon’s game drive, allowing you to explore a different part of the reserve. As the sun drops low on the horizon, your guide will find a vista from which you can watch a beautiful African sunset with sundowners. On the drive back to camp, keep your eyes peeled for nocturnal predators.
7:00 PM: On arrival back at your camp, you will have time for a shower before returning to the outdoor boma for a delicious dinner. Dinner is another excellent opportunity to talk with your guide about the day’s sightings, and the plan for the following day. After coffee and a nightcap around the bonfire, you’ll return to your comfortable bed for a good night’s sleep before the next day’s early rise.
