Don’t miss out on Kenya’s Secret Season

...code for Africa’s green savannas when the bushveld comes alive. Newborn animals of all species take over the bush, and dry landscapes like the grassy plains of the Masai Mara transform into verdant seas. The Secret Season encompasses Africa’s warm summer from December to May, so you can escape from the cold of the northern hemisphere. Safaris in these months offer considerable savings, as well as less crowded wildlife reserves, which means an exclusive and personal game viewing experience.
Beyond offering great value, Secret Season safaris in Kenya offer exceptional game viewing, a productive paradise of vibrant floral displays, and a kaleidoscope of colors which draws wildlife enthusiasts, and hobbyist and professional photographers alike. Summer mornings are exquisite. The temperature is perfect for pre-dawn starts to the day; like the animals, you can use the warmer midday for a siesta. Light for photography is at its best all year, while afternoon cloud formations add mood and contrast.

Celebration Safari

"I was sooooo surprised by the birthday surprises! from the 'elephant dung' cake at Mashatu, where we belly laughed for so long, to the elephant surprise 'bush brunch' at Vumbura Plains, where my eyes were somehow a little teary because it was so beautiful and the staff so excited."

Photographic Safari

"This was our first Africa visit; we'd thought about it for years and then in my husband's semi-retirement we thought that if we didn't do it NOW it would never happen. We arranged to travel with my husband's brother and wife. The photographic opportunities were myriad and truly stupendous. We were up and out in the Land Cruiser before sunrise each day to catch photos of wildebeests and, one morning, elephants, silhouetted with acacias on a ridge line as the sun rose. We ended our days with late-night nibbles with a choice of "one more for the road" and new friends from across the English-speaking world."

At the end of the day our travelers are most qualified to describe the African safari experience, and they certainly say it best.

Kenya's Secret Safari Season Itinerary

Nairobi, Kenya

There are all sorts of good reasons to enjoy a short stay in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi, like visiting the Giraffe Centre to hand-feed tame Rothschild's giraffes, and the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which rescues orphaned elephants and rhinos. Both are such heartwarming experiences. Also of interest are the Karen Blixen Museum and African curio markets. Take a respite after your international flight before you embark on your secret season journey at the contemporary Four Points by Sheraton. Enjoy modern amenities including a roof-top bar, restaurant, and pool to recover from your travels before the safari begins.

Day 1

Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Immerse yourself in the big skies, endless savanna and red-robed Maasai sharing their tribal lands with the big game of Africa. Watch the animal kingdom in its glory as you sip coffee at your private bush breakfast, or actively discover them on a walking safari. Though you may run into a cloudburst or two, your guide can usually drive around the rain since they're localized. The award-winning Little Governors’ is intimate in character, with just 17 luxury en suite tents dotted around a large watering hole that teems with both birds and wildlife. The camp is approached by a short ferry ride across the Mara River, then an escorted walk through the riverine forest. Vehicles are left on the far river bank, and the camp is therefore quiet and undisturbed. The guest tents at Little Governors’ have wooden decks with large verandas for guests to enjoy the constant game activity that takes place around the camp’s watering hole. Guests may need to make way for elephants which often visit the camp.

Day 2-5

Mount Kenya & Laikipia, Kenya

The Laikipia Plateau stretches from Mount Kenya to the Rift Valley, with more than two million acres of community lands, private ranches, and conservancies. This has opened up some ancient migratory corridors for wildlife and a refuge for some rarer species like wild dog, reticulated giraffe and Grevy's zebra. Enjoy activities including camel rides with Samburu guides and participating in the conservation of the local species. This family-oriented lodge is staffed by extraordinary local Kenyans many of whom grew up here or built the lodge with the owners. Enjoy the fun, energetic and attentive team during your stay while immersing yourself into life on safari. Enjoy activities on foot, horseback, wheels or simply relax by the pool. Young kids are busy at "Bush School" learning tracking skills, beadwork, fishing, or farm "chores" like collecting eggs from the chickens. All the while older children learn lion predator profiling and monitor wildlife using camera traps.
