The Regenerative Safari: How Luxury Meets Purpose

The term “regenerative tourism” has gained momentum in today’s travel trends, moving beyond the concept of sustainable travel to something even more profound. A recent Vogue article, written by Tanya Carr-Hartley, explores this evolved term, highlighting how safaris can be a force for good—for travelers, local communities, and the landscapes guests visit.

At Bushtracks Expeditions, we are proud to be strong contributors to this movement and historically have maintained this principle at the forefront of our mission. We craft safaris that leave a lasting impact not just on our guests, but also on the communities and wildlife that make Africa so extraordinary. As Carr-Hartley said, “There is no safari business without the regenerative side”. While sustainability focuses on minimizing harm, regenerative tourism takes it a step further—it actively restores and revitalizes.

HOW WE PARTICIPATE

Conservation-Focused Travel: Our Into the WildLIFE scheduled safaris include visits to private conservancies and national parks where tourism dollars directly fund wildlife protection initiatives, anti-poaching efforts, and habitat restoration. Whether it’s tracking rhinos with expert conservationists or staying at lodges that contribute to rewilding projects, our safaris help protect Africa’s iconic species.

Community Engagement: We work with local communities, supporting education programs, sustainable livelihoods, and cultural preservation. Guests have opportunities to engage meaningfully—whether by visiting schools supported by tourism revenue or learning from indigenous guides whose knowledge of the land goes back generations.

Eco-Luxury Lodges: Our handpicked accommodations for both our Tailored Safaris and Scheduled Safaris go beyond luxury—they are models of sustainability and regeneration. Many are solar-powered, plastic-free, and built with a deep respect for the surrounding environment. Some properties even contribute to large-scale reforestation and carbon offset programs.

REDEFINING VACATIONS

Luxury and purpose are not mutually exclusive. They belong together. Our Founder & CEO David Tett describes it best: “A Bushtracks journey offers adventure by day, and luxury at night. A day on safari can include not only game drives but walking safaris; sunrise balloon flights over herds of elephant; surprise “sun downer” cocktails around a campfire in the bush; rhino or gorilla tracking with expert trackers; canoeing big rivers past herds of buffalo; and exploring wild, remote and inaccessible places by helicopter. At night our guests return to beautifully designed natural spaces, where they shake the dust from their day’s adventure, relax in luxurious surroundings, and enjoy fresh and healthy cuisine while surrounded by graceful, genuine Africans who take pride in their culture and their friendly and genuine hospitality.”
